Highlights from the Ashes 2023 Day 2 of the 5th Test between England and Australia: Smith's 71 gives Australia a 295 run advantage at Stumps.

The match is finely balanced, and both teams have shown their competitiveness. Australia strong start on Day 1 has put them in a favorable position but England has the chance to turn things around on Day 2 with early wickets.

Denying Pat Cummins the opportunity to become the first visiting captain to win the Ashes trophy since 2001 will be a crucial task for the home team. Quick wickets in the first session of Day 2 could significantly impact the course of the match and put Australia under pressure.

One concern for England is James Anderson's wicketless spell. Nasser Hussain the former England captain, acknowledges that players go through ups and downs and Anderson despite being a great cricketer is currently facing a challenging period. Overcoming such spells is a testament to Anderson resilience and skill but the question remains whether he can bounce back at the age of 41.

Recapping Day 1 England batting performance saw some promising partnerships but also suffered collapses at crucial junctures. Mitchell Starc four wicket haul was instrumental in limiting England to 283 runs. Australia reply ended with 61 runs on the board for the loss of David Warner. With Usman Khawaja (26*) and Marnus Labuschagne (2) at the crease Australia is still 222 runs behind.

The match uncertainty adds to the excitement and makes it a riveting contest for cricket fans. As the action unfolds on Day 2 both teams will be eager to gain an advantage and make their mark in this crucial Test match.

Australia's batting performance in their first innings has given them a lead of 12 runs over England. They posted a total of 295 runs with Steve Smith leading the charge by scoring an impressive 71 runs off 123 balls. Usman Khawaja also contributed significantly with 47 runs off 157 deliveries.

On the bowling front Chris Woakes was the standout performer for England taking three wickets. Stuart Broad, Mark Wood and Joe Root also contributed to the bowling effort by scalping two dismissals each.
With the match still in progress it will be interesting to see how the teams perform in the following innings and whether Australia can maintain their lead or if England can turn the tide in their favor.

Joe Root, the bowler, tossed up a well directed delivery fast and flat putting the batsman Pat Cummins under pressure. Cummins decided to take on the challenge and launched the ball high, attempting to clear the long on boundary for a big shot.

However, Ben Stokes stationed at long on showed exceptional presence of mind and athleticism. He timed his jump perfectly to catch the ball but he realized that he was about to step over the boundary rope. In a remarkable display of skill and quick thinking Stokes released the ball just before crossing the rope and then managed to regain his balance and composure to complete the catch after re entering the field of play.

As a result of this excellent team effort Pat Cummins was dismissed, scoring 36 runs off 86 balls. Fielding moments like this can often turn the tide of a cricket match and provide a much needed boost to the fielding side morale.
A full-length delivery by Woakes and Murphy fails to connect with the bat. The ball strikes Murphy's front pad and the umpire raises the finger signaling an LBW (Leg Before Wicket) decision. As a result, Murphy departs after scoring 34 runs off 39 balls.

In cricket, an LBW dismissal occurs when the ball in the umpire's judgment would have hit the stumps but is obstructed by the batsman body instead of the bat. If the ball would have gone on to hit the stumps and the batsman leg is in line with the stumps the umpire rules the batsman out LBW.

Defensive shots are commonly played by batsmen to protect their wickets and avoid getting out while facing challenging deliveries. The bowler tactic of delivering a short of a length ball can be an attempt to induce a mistake from the batsman or create pressure by varying the length and line of the deliveries.
Cricket is a game of tactics and skill and every delivery can be crucial in shaping the outcome of a match. Observing these moments helps cricket fans appreciate the strategic battles between bowlers and batsmen during the course of a game.

James Anderson delivered a poor delivery possibly bowling it on the pads of the batsman Murphy. A delivery on the pads is considered to be in the batsman scoring zone making it easier for them to play attacking shots.
Murphy took advantage of the loose delivery and flicked or sent the ball to the square leg region likely for a single run. By doing so Australia managed to take the lead in the match.

Taking the lead means that Australia has now scored more runs in their first innings than England did in their first innings. It is a significant milestone in a cricket match as it puts the batting team in a position of advantage.
