During the present heavy rains in Mumbai the number of leptospirosis and chikungunya infections has increased significantly in July. The city has reported 104 new instances of leptospirosis in the last week alone. Furthermore, the total number of instances of these monsoon-related disorders reported in Mumbai during the first 16 days of July has surpassed the total number of cases reported for the entire month of June. These statistics were published in a study by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation which emphasizes the alarming increase in such ailments during the current monsoon season.
Leptospirosis is a bacterial ailment spread through water polluted with diseased animals' urine. Heavy rains can hasten the spread of this disease by washing bacteria into bodies of water with which humans come into contact.
Chikungunya, on the other hand is a viral ailment spread by mosquito bites and stagnant water caused by heavy rains can provide breeding grounds for mosquitos, leading to an increase in cases.
The surge in these monsoon related infections creates a public health concern for Mumbai emphasizing the significance of taking precautions and maintaining good sanitation and cleanliness during the wet season. To protect public health in the city the BMC and related authorities are likely to step up efforts to restrict and manage the spread of these diseases.
