In the second T20 match of the 5 match series against West Indies, India faced another defeat which marked their second consecutive loss in the series. The match was held at Providence Stadium, Guyana. With this victory West Indies took a 2-0 lead in the series. In the match India batting performance was once again disappointing. On his second T20 appearance Tilak Varma managed to score a respectable half century contributing to India total of 152 runs. India had a poor start losing two wickets for just 18 runs with Shubman Gill and Suryakumar Yadav falling cheaply. However, Tilak Varma and Ishan Kishan tried to stabilize the innings with a partnership of 42 runs. Tilak Varma innings of 51 runs off 41 balls made him the youngest Indian cricketer to score a half century in T20 matches. During India innings the wickets continued to fall at regular intervals and despite a partnership between Tilak Varma and captain Hardik Pandya the rest of the batsmen couldn't make significant contributions. India managed to reach a score of 152 runs losing seven wickets in their allotted 20 overs. Alzarri Joseph was the standout bowler for West Indies taking two wickets and conceding 28 runs in his spell. The game brought attention to India's batting lineup issues and prompted concerns about their readiness for both the upcoming T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the ODI World Cup that will be played in India next year. Overall, India second T20 match against West Indies was a challenging and closely contested encounter with West Indies coming out on top and asserting their dominance in the series. Tilak Varma mature innings played a crucial role in holding India together. In the previous game despite it being his debut, he showed fearlessness by hitting back to back sixes to open his runs tally. However, in this match he played a more anchor role for the team. Coming in at 18 for 2 in the fourth over with the top order struggling Tilak showed confidence even when he was scoring at a slower pace initially. He hit two boundaries early on, a loft over mid on and a bold scoop over short fine leg displaying his ability to play different shots. Eventually, he upped the tempo and scored 51 runs off 41 balls, providing stability to the Indian innings. Although Tilak had some lucky breaks during his innings with chances being dropped by the opposition fielders he continued to take calculated risks including a reverse-sweep for four and a heave over short fine for six. On the other hand, Nicholas Pooran was the catalyst for West Indies strong start. He came to the crease when West Indies were 2 for 2 and after a slow start he suddenly shifted gears and started scoring boundaries and sixes freely. His aggressive batting saw him hitting sixes and fours off various bowlers including a barrage of boundaries in the fifth over. He reached his half-century off just 29 balls giving West Indies a flying start. However, Pooran's dismissal triggered a mini collapse for West Indies creating tension in their dressing room. Luckily Akeal Hosein and Alzarri Joseph held their nerves and guided West Indies to victory with an unbroken ninth-wicket partnership. Overall, Tilak Varma mature innings and Nicholas Pooran explosive batting were the standout performances in the match making it an exciting and closely contested game. West Indies successfully chased down the target of 153 runs winning with seven balls to spare. The chase got dramatic as West Indies lost four wickets for just three runs in 13 deliveries when they needed 27 runs off 37 balls. Akeal Hosein and Alzarri Joseph played a crucial role in rescuing West Indies with an unbroken ninth-wicket partnership of 26 runs to secure the victory. Before their batting heroics Hosein and Joseph also performed well with the ball grabbing two wickets each, along with Romario Shepherd, to restrict India to 152 runs. Nicholas Pooran was the standout performer for West Indies scoring 67 runs off 40 balls with six fours and four sixes keeping the pressure on India during the chase. Rovman Powell captaincy and bowling tactics played a significant role in unsettling India batters as he constantly rotated the bowlers and didn't allow them to settle. The West Indies bowlers including Obed McCoy, Jason Holder, Akeal Hosein and Alzarri Joseph executed their plans well bowling with variation and control and maintaining an economy rate of less than seven runs per over.
The pitch conditions also played a part in aiding the West Indies bowlers as it offered turn for the spinners and variable bounce for the pace bowlers making it difficult for the Indian batters to score freely. This victory gave West Indies a chance to win the T20I series against India for the first time in seven years and it was a hard fought and thrilling match with ups and downs for both teams.
