On Sunday, the Pakistan government granted clearance for its senior men cricket team to travel to India for the 2023 World Cup. The tournament is scheduled to take place in India from 5 October to 19 November with a highly anticipated match between India and Pakistan set to be played on October 14 in Ahmedabad.

Despite the ongoing political tensions between the two countries Pakistan has maintained its stance that sports should not be mixed with politics. As a result it has decided to send its team to India to fulfill its international sports-related obligations.

However, the Pakistan government has expressed deep concerns about the security of its cricket team during the tournament. It plans to convey these concerns to both the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Indian authorities. The statement from Pakistan foreign ministry emphasizes the importance of ensuring the safety and security of its players during the event.

The Pakistan government expects that the full safety and security of the Pakistan cricket team will be ensured during their visit to India for the 2023 World Cup. The safety of the players, officials and support staff is of paramount importance and the government urges the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Indian authorities to take all necessary measures to provide a secure environment for the team throughout the tournament.

Pakistan's decision to send its cricket team to India for the 2023 World Cup demonstrates its constructive and responsible approach towards India intransigent attitude. It is worth noting that India had previously refused to send its cricket team to Pakistan for the Asia Cup. With the approval from the Pakistan government the long period of uncertainty regarding the national team's participation in the 50 over event has come to an end. The focus now shifts to ensuring the team safety and security during their visit to India for the tournament.

The decision by Pakistan former cricketer and PCB chief Ramiz Raja to initially announce that Pakistan would not send its team to India for the 2023 World Cup was in response to India refusal to travel to Pakistan for the Asia Cup in the same year. This created a tense situation and raised uncertainties over Pakistan participation in the upcoming World Cup. However, later on the Pakistan government decided to allow the team to participate in the tournament emphasizing the importance of fulfilling international sports-related obligations despite concerns about team security.

India have declined to visit Pakistan for the October 2022 Asia Cup. The BCCI secretary Jay Shah who is also the president of the Asian Cricket Council stated that the tournament would be held in a hybrid model which was eventually agreed upon. As per the agreed format the Asia Cup started in Pakistan on August 30, 2022 with four matches played in the country while Sri Lanka hosted the remaining nine matches including the final. This decision by India led to tensions between the two countries and raised concerns about Pakistan participation in the 2023 World Cup in India.

A few days ago the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had written to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif seeking official clearance for the team to travel to India for the 2023 World Cup. The letter was also addressed to the interior and foreign ministries. To decide whether Pakistan would take part in the major event Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif established a high level committee under the direction of Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto.

Prior to giving approval there were reports of a security delegation being sent to India to assess the venues where Pakistan will play during the World Cup. This step was taken to ensure the safety and security of the Pakistani cricket team during their visit to India.

The last time the Pakistan team traveled to India was in 2016 for the ICC World T20 and since then there have been uncertainties and tensions regarding bilateral cricketing ties between the two countries.

the Pakistan government has taken a constructive and responsible approach by deciding to fulfill its international sports related obligations and sending its cricket team to India for the 2023 World Cup despite the prevailing state of bilateral relations between the two countries. This decision highlights Pakistan's commitment to sportsmanship and its belief in keeping sports separate from politics.

The release further emphasizes the contrast in attitudes between the two nations as India had previously refused to send its cricket team to Pakistan for the Asia Cup in October 2022. Pakistan decision to participate in the World Cup despite the past differences with India over cricketing events showcases a willingness to engage in sports diplomacy and promote the spirit of sportsmanship beyond political boundaries.
